Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

Update manager 'loops' if there is a 'serious' or 'grave' error showing in the apt-get install part of update manager (on one or more packages).
You can get past it by making sure that 'details' is clicked during install and then typing 'n' and enter in the pseudo terminal window. This will abort the install safely.

Thanks for your bugreport.

If this happend to you on a regular update, could you please attach the file /var/log/apt/term.log ? If it happend on a release upgrade (e.g. 8.04->8.10) please attach the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/*

Hi Michael,As I mentioned system won't let me attack var/log/apt/term -
so I attach error listing from apt-get update.
Kind regards,Roger

Hi Roger, you need superuser privileges in order to read that file. You can copy the file and then gives the read right to the copy with the following commands.
- Open a terminal ( Applications / Accessories / Terminal )
then type the commands:
sudo cp /var/log/apt/term.log /tmp/
sudo chmod og+r /tmp/term.log

Then attach the file /tmp/term.log to this report.

Thank you.

Thanks for your e-mail re. chnod. Please find enc. 2 attachments
1)tmp/term.log
2)HTML of error messages
I'm not sure term.log contains useful data as one has to 'force' an exit
from update manager - so 'grave' error updates are not performed.
Good luck,Roger

Thank you but the term.log is too recent compared to the date of the failure. There are other files named term.log.1.gz,... into the directory /var/log/apt/

Could you please attach the one of the time when you've observed the "loops" ? Thank you in advance.

I have recreated 'loop' in u/manager & enclose copy of term.log &
term.log.1.gz as well as printout of error messages.
I am not sure if any useful data will be there as effectively update
manager does not finish (it is a forced finish).
I think there are 2 problems:-
1) update manager should return to the user when it encounters 'serious'
or 'grave' bugs - rather than waiting for user to type 'n' in terminal
window (assuming user remembers to click 'details' button).
2) Why does u/manager (or apt-get install) pick up bugs at the pharsing
stage when the updates are supposed to cure the problem.
Is this possibly linked to the report I got on distro update to hardy
that there had been a d/base crash ?
Kind regards,Roger
