failed to mark 'kubuntu-desktop' for install (E:Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.)

Bug #279884 reported by Jason Burrows on 2008-10-07
Affects Status Importance Assigned to Milestone
update-manager (Ubuntu)

Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

The problem is Hardy fails to upgrade to Ibex via update-manager unless package gobuntu-desktop is installed (or one of its dependents?)

After running "update-manager -d", update-manager pops up a dialog stating "Can't install 'gobuntu-desktop'" shortly after disabling third-party sources in the update process. Upon clicking Ok, the upgrade process is cancelled and update-manager closes out the distribution upgrade window.

I installed gobuntu-desktop manually and re-attempted the distribution upgrade, the warning "Can't install 'gobuntu-desktop'" did not pop up this time and thus the upgrade process seems to be possible.

Packages installed via 'apt-get install gobuntu-desktop':

  ekiga epiphany-browser epiphany-browser-data epiphany-gecko evolution
  evolution-data-server evolution-exchange evolution-plugins gnome-games
  gnome-orca gobuntu-desktop libavahi-gobject0 pidgin-otr tomboy

Update-Manager 1:0.87.30
Hardy AMD64, Gnome

Thanks for your bugreport.

I would need the logs in /var/log/dist-upgrade/* from the failed attempt to properly diagnose what the problem is. Are they still available?

I'm sorry, no they're not. They've been overwritten by post-installation executions.

I got a similar error - "It was impossible to install a required package. Please report this as a bug.". Please find the tar file for the dist-upgrade folder. I hope this helps.

Marking this bug as "New" as noone seems to have done so since the information that was requested was added.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently.

We were wondering if this is still an issue for you. Can you try with the latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.
