Installation of x86 version on a 64-bit processor corrupts package sources

I apologize if this has been reported prior. Here's what happens.

When I install the Ubuntu 8.04 32-bit version from CD onto a computer with a 64-bit processor, it corrupts packages. So far I've installed it on a Dell GX620 and a custom computer with a AMD Athlon 3000+ processor. When I finish the CD install and reboot, I immediately run the following commands:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

The commands complete successfully and download the 234+ MB of updates to bring the system current. On reboot, the notification area says I need to install an additional 55+ MB of updates which if I do, I can then no longer install most packages from Add/Remove or the Synaptic Package Manager. It gives an error saying the software does not come in an i386 format. Some packages from the command line say the source.list is corrupt and the software cannot be installed.

The workaround is to not install any updates from the command line and to wait for the notification area to ask to install them. If they install from there, the system works fine after reboot.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and help make Ubuntu better. Could you please attach the log file /var/log/apt/term.log and your /etc/apt/sources.list file. Also, please copy and paste any errors from the terminal when you try to install applications using apt-get.
