Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

Now that edgy has migrated from archive.ubuntu.com to old-releases.ubuntu.com, do-release-upgrade refuses to upgrade from edgy to feisty unless hit with a bat.

The specific workaround is:
1) with sources.list pointing at edgy on old-releases.ubuntu.com, run do-release-upgrade
2) when do-release-upgrade complains that it couldn't find a valid mirror, edit sources.list to change old-releases to archive.ubuntu.com, and then say "yes, go ahead and use my unofficial mirror, kthx"

do-release-upgrade needs to understand that old-releases is something that may need to be changed into archive.ubuntu.com. (At some point in about 6 months or more, feisty will move too, and then changing old-releases to archive becomes a bug...)

Thanks for your bugreport.

I commited a fix for this into my intrepid branch. It will auto transition from old-releases back to archive.ubuntu.com though. I'm not sure if that is the best way to do it, afterall it means people have 6 month to upgrade from a unsupported release before the behavior will become a bug. If you think this is not sufficient, then please reopen and I will try to come up with some more clever transition logic.

I'm confronting this bug now, which is particularly frustrating because the notice on old-releases.ubuntu.com specifically says:

(Ubuntu 6.10 is still supported, but is distributed from this site for space reasons.)

But I wanted to clarify the procedure. When do-release-upgrade complains about mirrors, you must edit sources.list while the [yN] question is being asked. So suspend your d-release-upgrade process with control-Z or open another terminal window and edit your sources.list. Then back in the running do-release-upgrade process, say "Y" and you'll have slipped the new sources.list into the mix without it ever being wiser.

but what a hassle!
