Bug Description
Binary package hint: update-manager
First I had tried to upgrade to 8.04LTS, but this failed and reported possible problem with
Could not calculate the upgrade
A unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.
This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/
I then tried to simply upgrade 7, but got a message headed:
Not all updates can be installed
so I tried partial upgrade, but that got a message:
Could not calculate the upgrade

It almost looks as though the ubuntu-desktop meta package wasn't installed before you did your upgrade...
What kind of error message do you get if you try 'sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop' ?
