Sorry about the title.

It should read as follows

Update Manager can't find linux-image-2.6.22-14-generic upgrading 7.10 to 8.04

Here's a bit more information about the circumstances.

Selection of the Upgrade button for "New distribution release '8.04 LTS' is available."

Upgrade Manager seemingly failed during the update (window disappeared, nothing visibly happening after several minutes' wait).

On re-invoking Upgrade Manager, the reported pop-up appeared.
This behaviour is repeatable.

Here they are ...

The failure seems to have left the package management in a twist.

The package was definitely in /var/cache/apt/archives, but apt-get and aptitude failed to find it.
The package wasn't corrupted (checksum against downloaded file).
Don't know enough to investigate further.

Resolved by dpkg -i

Keep up the good work.
