Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

I'm trying to upgrade from Kubuntu Dapper to Hardy using the alternate cd-rom (downloaded at http://releases.ubuntu.com/8.04/ubuntu-8.04-alternate-amd64.iso on the 1st of May)
I get this error at the very first stage of the upgrade:

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/tmp/tmp.Y8RhyN/hardy", line 60, in ?
  File "/tmp/tmp.Y8RhyN/DistUpgradeController.py", line 1550, in run
  File "/tmp/tmp.Y8RhyN/DistUpgradeController.py", line 1423, in fullUpgrade
  File "/tmp/tmp.Y8RhyN/DistUpgradeViewKDE.py", line 589, in setStep
    label.setText("<b>" + label.text() + "</b>")
TypeError: cannot concatenate 'str' and 'QString' objects

I fixed it locally by changing line 589 in question:
    label.setText("<b>" + str(label.text()) + "</b>")

Reopening this bug as it affects multiple people.

The workaround in the original report (which you seem to have missed) "works" for a while but after getting a list of updates the script restarts with a hardcoded path, so the workaround needs to be applied to the copy in the CD-ROM, not just worked around.

We do not officially support cdrom ugprade from kubuntu 6.06 to 8.04. As a workaround, please try to add the cdrom (e.g. via apt-cdrom add) and then run the online upgrade from 6.06 to 8.04 via:
$ sudo apt-get install update-manager
$ sudo update-manager -d

this will run the gtk version of the upgrader. It is better tested currently for lts->lts upgrades.
