no hardy update button in update-manager

Binary package hint: update-manager

update-manager won't propose the upgrade from Gutsy to Hardy. I'm running a Xubuntu Gutsy on an EeePC (lsb_release -a indicates Ubuntu 7.10).
According to update-manager -c -d, my system is up to date and doesn't show the dist-upgrade button. I also tried do-release-upgrade, who "checks for a new ubuntu release" for several minutes before displaying "No new release found"

I removed my custom sources.list and created a new one from synaptic which contains only :
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ gutsy main universe restricted multiverse
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ gutsy-updates main universe restricted multiverse
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ gutsy-security main universe restricted multiverse

What can be wrong ?

I could of course make the change gutsy->hardy in the sources.list but I'd rather upgrade the clean way.

I also have no upgrade option. I've been running the vanilla gutsy 7.10 on my IBM thinkpad T42. I have not modified the package manager in any way. The update manager simply says everything is up-to-date.

Normally pressing "check" in update-manager should make the button appear.

The output of the file looks good - so you don't see a upgrade button even with the latest update-manager from gutsy-updates? Is there any output when you run "update-manager" on a terminal window? Does the file /home/egon/.update-manager-core/meta-release contain a reference to hardy?

Alternatively doing a network-upgrade from Gutsy (7.10) to Hardy (8.04) by using the »alternate cd install« works fine.

I gave, changed gutsy->hardy in /etc/apt/sources.list and sudo apt-get update && apt-get upgrade and everything went smoothly...
