Software Updater shows nothing listed to install or remove but says that 64.5 MB will be downloaded. IF you click on "install now" nothing happens and same message is displayed again and again...

Bug Description

The title could have been better but I'm not sure how to rephase it. I'm sorry for the length of this description, but some background is probably warranted...

Ubuntu 22.04.1 was upgraded on Aug 15 from UBUNTU 20.04 That upgrade failed miserably when PYTHON attempted to upgrade itself and failed resulting in a no-python system for the remainder of the upgrade (which took 4+ hours) resulting in a totally destroyed system and the destruction of all backups that were on a separate (and unmounted) HDD.

End result- the original HDD was reformatted and a fresh install of UBUNTU 22.04.1 was accomplished.

Since then I have been trying to establish a working system. Many issues still exist: XORG will not aways recover after "suspend" (NVIDIA video with NVIDIA SERVER driver 470.141.03; power setting: Blank screen after 15 min); FIREFOX had to be reinstalled as a DEB to restore functionality (snap deleted, now works correctly); FIREFOX 105.0.2 (64-bit) constantly posted a pop-up screen saying "UNABLE TO UPDATE" for almost a month.

- - -

This morning (13 OCT 2022) the software updater tool (software-manager) installed some system updates, one of which was FIREFOX 105.0.3

Immediately after the update, the software-manager restarted itself with the message "Updated software is available for this computer. Do you want to install it now?" but there were no updates listed in the "details of updates" but the bottom of the window indicated that 64.5 MB will be downloaded.

I click on "Install NOW" and it redisplayed the same screen. Software Updater is now in a loop where it will display the same "empty" screen and if I click on "install NOW" it just repeats itself.

Additional information available: three screenshots:
(1) first screenshot is the screen that was repeated on THURSDAY 13 OCT.
(2) second and third screenshots are what is being repeated on Friday 14 OCT.
on Friday, supposedly a 1.7 MB file was download (and installed (??) ) titled "ubuntu base"

My Internet speed is very low, the download and install took place in less than 2 seconds, so I doubt anything actually occurred. Note that the download is 1.7MB but the bottom of the screen says that 64.5MB will be downloaded.

The third screen is what is constantly being displayed now, whenever I click on "install now"

Here is a Syslog taken just after another run of update-manager

I'm seeing a lot of "warnings" and things that look like errors, but I'm really not very well-versed in the internals of LINUX. I just want a system that I can get back and use...

This problem can now be closed.

The problem resolved itself after the following three commands were issued when resolving a different issue. During the "autoremove", it was noticed that FIREFOX was regressed to version 101 and an unnamed package of 64.5 MB was deleted. The next run of Software-manager then loaded FIREFOX version 105.0.3

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade
sudo apt autoremove
