I have a similar problem.
've been trying to upgrade my kubuntu box from feisty to gutsy this evening. The upgrade manager says "could not verify the integrity of the upgrade manager" and the exits. I went into Konsole to take a look. I did
sudo apt-get clean sudo apt-get autoclean sudo apt-get update
