"ubuntu upgrade available" popup "yes upgrade now" does nothing

I was helped on #ubuntu on irc, executing "do-release- upgrade" in bash does the trick.
But
There was no feedback or error or log saying that my shell was the issue. I wasn't aware that changing my shell could have this effect.
So I would still consider this 'bad behavior' and a bug.
