Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

Trying to upgrade from 7.04 to 7.10 using the update manager, it downloads various files for a while, then terminates the upgrade (still on first step "Preparing the upgrade" of process in "Distribution upgrade" window) with the following message:

---
Error during update

A problem occured during the update. This is usually some sort of network problem, please check your network connection and retry.

Failed to fetch http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/dists/feisty-commercial/main/binary-i386/Packages.bz2 Sub-process bzip2 returned an error code (2)
Failed to fetch http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/dists/feisty-commercial/main/binary-i386/Packages.bz2 Sub-process bzip2 returned an error code (2)

It's obviously not a network or connection problem, as many files download just fine. It seems to hang on "Fetching file 49 of 58" several times.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Could you please add all the files contained in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ to your bug report as separate attachments? Thanks in advance.

Hi Brian,

I successfully used the workaround suggested in the forum thread (the
one mentioned in the bug report) to upgrade to 7.10 yesterday. Will
the logs still be useful to you? If so, I'd be happy to attach them.

Cheers,

Amos

There seem to be several workarounds which workaround worked for you?

The instructions talked about backing up your /etc/apt/sources.list file. Do you still happen to have the problematic one? Thanks again!

Hi Brian,

Here's the backup file. I mentioned in the forum thread that I suspected the automatix stuff might have something to do with the problem, but other users say they have the same problem without automatix installed.

Cheers,

Amos

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

We are closing this report because you reported this bug a while ago and there is no recent duplicate nor user mentioning having the issue on Intrepid. If this is still an issue, don't hesitate to reopen the report. Thanks again!

Hi Jean-Baptiste,

My apologies for the delay in responding - as I said previously, the
workaround did it for me, so by all means close this issue. I'm no
longer using automatix (if indeed that had something to do with it) on
my current installation and won't be upgrading to a different release
for a while, but will report problems if and when I do.

Cheers,

Amos
