I tried to mark this 'upgrade-manager', but launchpad insists that there is no such project.

Thanks for your bugreport.

Your /etc/apt/sources.list seems to be incorrect and causes this error.

While I did have a sources.list with some nonexistent things in it, the update-manager removed them a long time ago. Here is the current content.

The problem has, in fact, worsened. Now, running the update manager gives me the following even before I ask it to do anything.

It turns out that the update-manager had replaced one invalid sources.list with a different invalid sources.list, and further trimming got the show onto the road. Should that be separately reported?

Benson,

the last two lines in your sources.list are not correct:
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ restricted main multiverse universe
deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ restricted main multiverse universe

The release (Feisty / Gutsy) is missing, so restricted is used as release and that does not exist.
Assuming the upgrade failed completely, so you are still running Feisty, I suggest to change the last two lines to:
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ feisty restricted main multiverse universe
deb-src http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ feisty restricted main multiverse universe

Then try again.
