Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

when I opened update manager it said there was a dist upgrade available. I used this method to upgrade from 6.10 to 7.04 and the process was smooth, so I figured I'd do it again. However this time it gets to the second step and freezes when the bottom says checking package manager. the update manager icon in the notification area tells me that there are 932 upgrades available but I'm not sure it's wise to use that method. let me know what you need and I will gladly post it

I read them myself just now and it may be my fault, it seems the ubuntu-desktop package has some conflicts I will clear them up and see if it fixes things. I forgot that a while ago I manually installed a deb of the version 5 bittorent which conflicted with it.

nope now it freezes on the first item so it didn't get far enough to give me a new apt.log

I have a similar problem, the upgrade process from web will freeze at 'reading cache' phase and upgrading from the alternate CD will crash at 'checking package manager'.

The same here, only I had left only 723 updates after starting the upgrade process; the update process would start and package manager was loaded, but it produced the message that it couldn't continue because the upgrade process hadn't been finished... and that was about as much I got from it.

Here are my logs fr om /var/log/dist-upgrade as well.

Richard.

I also get the same error when running the update-manager from the
command line but only if I run it as root from the start.

the tool still freezes for me from the brand new alternate cdromupgrade script, or even from update manager...
what is going on!
is it a particular package that is messing this up??
i used the same sources to upgrade a different machine last night but with different problems, no freezing...
for that machine the package messing it all up was nvidia-glx-legacy
here.. no idea.
more thoughts?

It seems after the upgrade to 8.04. It's ok, but my 3D rendering isn't going smoothly. I get flickering and sometimes I get black screen. If I attempt to move the mouse or the item, I get the right screen but then b lack again. Any ideas?

Is this still an issue with more recent versions of update-manager? The releases this bug has been confirmed have reached EOL, and there has been no activity for more then 3 years.
