Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

Hi everybody,

Today, I tried to upgrade my system from Feisty to Gutsy (Ubuntu => Gnome) using what is told here https://wiki.ubuntu.com/GutsyGibbon/Tribe5/ but it failed with this message :

"The system was unable to get the pre-requists for the upgrade. The upgrade will abort now and restore the original system state.

Please report this as a bug against [...]"

Here are the logs I was told to include.

I have found a workaround. But I need to explain some things :

I'm french, and as there are some annoying things with the UTF-8 locales, I changed it to fr_FR@euro ISO-8859-15. Then, I had set the language (in gnome's loggin screen) to "Français euro" (means "French euro").

That's why apt failed to fetch http://<email address hidden>/ubuntu/dists/feisty-backports/main/debian-installer/i18n/Translation-fr.bz2.

So I changed the language to "Français" (instead of "Français euro"), and miracle (!) everything wanted very well (apt then created deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu feisty-backports main/debian-installer instead of the adress above).

I hope this helps resolve the bug.

After I changed that, the upgrade succeeded without any problem.

You welcome, it's always a pleasure, when I have some time.

PS : By the way... is there a simple way to change the default locales in Ubuntu (instead of UTF-8) ? It would be nice that it could be possible as because of that, in some languages (like french, spanish, etc.), you even cannot copy some files on USB sticks or external HDD (and other things).

This is not a problem for me as I know how to change it, but it is a problem for newbies (you have to edit text files and then run a command through the terminal) and they just don't understand why they can't copy some files and just think that "Linux does not work".
