12-04 to 14-04 upgrade fails cannot calclate size

Bug Description

When I try and upgrade to 14-04 LTS it fails at the step when it tries to calculate the amount of disk space needed. It then restores the original configuration. Please suggest another upgrade path other than wiping the disk.
