I expected it to upgrade the packages that it found needed to be upgraded. Instead, it just disappeared off the desktop. No notice of it crashing was given by the system, but that is what I believe happened. I then upgraded the packages via apt-get. Specifically, "apt-get update" and "apt-get dist-upgrade". These commands found the same needed upgrades that update-manager found, but these commands worked and did the upgrade, whereas update-manager did not.
