Bug Description

Binary package hint: upgrade-system

During the upgrade from edgy to feisty, the upgrade system uninstalled my nvidia driver. That caused xorg to fail to start because xorg.conf still referred to the nvidia driver. As far as I remember, I have never touched the xorg.conf file so Ubuntu should have been able to prevent the breakage by changing the xorg.conf file so that it referred to the nv driver instead. Admittedly, it reported that it wanted to remove the nvidia package, but I was in a hurry and didn't notice that. In short, the update system should never cause xorg to be unstartable because that is equivalent to a total system failure for a less experienced Linux user.

I think it is. Although I can't test it, another machine being upgraded while the driver is changed would also cause X to not start. The same thing would happen if you decide to downgrade from the nv driver to nvidia -- xorg.conf would point to the wrong driver.
