Bug Description

upgrade from 12.04 to 12.10 showed us that the nforce sata chipset drivers no longer exist in linux-generic (3.5 kernel) with disasterous consequences : since the root file system was on the nForce sata bus this results in an unbootable system!

After a longer bout of debugging we found the sata_nv module in linux-image-extra, but since the upgrade did not pull in this package I can only assume this will break ubuntu 12.10 for anyone with an nForce chipset..

Unable to run command. There are no logs attached because the system did not boot when bug was present, and submitting logs from the system after it was fixed doesn't make sense.

Yes, the linux-image-extra package is required for that module. This may be a bug in update-manager if the -extra package wasn't installed during the upgrade. How did you perform the upgrade?
