Bug Description

Ubuntu system, starting from LUbuntu desktop. Packages could not be upgraded. Samba could not be updated. Finally, updater told me upgrade had failed and system was in unstable state. It told me to file a bug report and include file /var/log/dist-update. That file doesn't exist, but /var/log/dist-upgrade/* exists. Will attach main.log and crash report if Launchpad will let me.

Update software requested a password to complete report files. Validation failed because it was asking for a _root_ password, and root is not enabled on Ubuntu systems.

What a mess.

OK, one file was attached automatically. I can supply others on request. I have /tmp/apport.update-manager.1jguAX.apport as well as /var/log/dist-upgrade/*.

I have more information. At least the problems appear to be minor, since nothing melted.

The problem occurred on a second computer. Both computers evidently repaired themselves so they were left in a bootable state. On the second computer the command
dpkg --configure -a
was issued.

Error message on updating the second computer:
"Could not install /var/cache/apt/archive/samba_2%
3a3.5.11adfsg-ubuntu2.3_i386.deb
subprocess new post-removal script returned error exit status 2"

There appear to be two easy workarounds for samba.
1. I used Synaptic to repair samba.
2. On a second computer,
sudo apt-get install gnome-session-fallback
repaired samba automatically.
