I just experienced a similar thing. I can install the updates, but then it crashes after they are installed. It must crash instead of closing nicely. I have precise-proposed enabled, do you?

I had many of the same symptoms. I found a rec from JerryS to do in terminal:

sudo apt-get clean

sudo apt-get update

and "Software Updater" ran without crashing, and did lots of updates, which it would not do before.

I cannot confirm total success yet. I am now at the stage "The computer needs to restart to finish installing updates". But I want to post before closing all my tabs for the reboot.

I had the same symptoms and was able to fix them by following Rich Fiekowsky suggestion

sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update

and then I was able to run
sudo apt-get upgrade and start the synaptic without problems.
