Bug Description

The unzip package show the behavior described in this Red Hat bugreport: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=972427

The symptom is that under some circumstances, files become corrupted during extraction. This seems to be a common problem when downloading zipped snapshots of the Linux kernel from sites like github.com.

I too have been affected by this bug. In particular, when downloading the following file from github

In Ubuntu 14.04 (ARM-hf)
sudo apt-get install unzip
wget https://github.com/Xilinx/linux-xlnx/archive/xlnx_3.17.zip
unzip xlnx_3.17.zip

This results in some filenames becoming corrupt. For examples
ls linux-xlnx-xlnx_3.17/fs/f2fs/

Will show one filename with a corrupted name that has been replaced by a code segment.

See this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases:

I could not replicate the reported behavior on Ubuntu 22.04.2 LTS (Jammy Jellyfish).

$ wget https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/archive/refs/heads/rpi-3.9.y.zip
$ unzip rpi-3.9.y.zip

and

$ wget https://github.com/Xilinx/linux-xlnx/archive/xlnx_3.17.zip
$ unzip xlnx_3.17.zip
$ ls linux-xlnx-xlnx_3.17/fs/f2fs/

worked as expected
