Bug Description

Ubuntu 17.04 Unity 8

OSK doesn't work with Xmir or gtk3
enable the On Screen Keyboard (from indicator menu or from system settings)
open gedit or terminix (without Xmir) and try to type something, OSK doesn't show, same with running on Xmir

GTK apps are accidentally using Xmir today (bug 1672931).

So is this just a problem with Xmir-launched apps then?

i tested with terminix and gedit native (without Xmir) and it doesn't bring up the keyboard. qt5 apps seems to work fine though, tested with kate, tiled, qupzilla, also seems to work fine in app drawer, system settings

AFAIK input methods like the OSK require a third-party process to mediate between the toolkit and the shell, telling the shell when to pop up/down the OSK. So not having that intermediary running (and/or with sufficient privileges) is the problem.

Was it content-hub or something else? I can't remember. If it's not UAL's job then Unity8 should have it running already as part of the session.
