recent LightDM changes stop XApps from launching in Unity 8

Bug Description
Changes made to LightDM to fix bug #1583624 cause Unity 8 configuration to fail in its upstart job, which causes the symptom that XApps no longer launch. It may cause other problems as well.
The root of the problem is that the variable MIR_SOCKET is no longer present in the enviroment when Unity 8 is started.
