Hi Ian,

Thanks for submitting this bug report.

This is due to how the Linux Container (LXC) is set up for the Unity 8 session. A best practice for setting up LXC's is to use an Ethernet bridge between the container and the host. This is how the unity8-lxc is set up.

That said, I can look into seeing if it's possible to directly set up the network from the Unity 8 session and if so, make sure it's sound as far as LXC's go.

Hi Christopher, can you please post some instructions in setting up an Ethernet bridge between the lxc container and the host? Currently I'm unable to use networking in the unity 8 lxc containers, which is of very limited use. I'd like to be able to install applications, etc. I only use wireless connections on my laptop.

Thanks.

I have a very similar issue with Intel Corporation Wireless 7260 (rev 6b).

Two observations:
* when connected to wifi, after logging into unity8-lxc it does not show as connected to wifi. When I attempt to open the wifi section of control center, the session freezes and I have to reboot.

* when in Unity 7 and connected to wifi, the lxc container can also not access internet:
sudo unity8-lxc-setup --update-lxc
> Starting the container
> Not able to connect to the network.

I would really appreciate a instructions for a work-around so I can enjoy testing.

Hi All,

A few things to clear up:

1. The Ethernet bridge is automatically set up when running unity8-lxc-setup for the first time (or anytime --rebuild-config is passed in).
2. As of right now, the Unity 8 lxc assumes a network connection to the Internet on the host already exists when it starts up. This means if you are using wireless, the wireless connection needs to be established in LightDM (the place where you log in to the different desktop sessions).

I have it on my to-do list to see if I can somehow get wireless networking into the container so users can setup/enable/disable their wireless networking from Unity 8. LXC's are pretty confined by default and I want to take care not to break anything or somehow make the system less secure.

Logging in with Unity 8 lxc on a dell xps 13 ultrabook does not give me any network connection. This is despite a fresh boot-up, and connecting first in LightDM. This machine is wireless only.

There's very limited testing I can do until this issue is fixed.

Thanks.

Are all folks posting in this bug using Utopic? If so, are you using the unity8-lxc package from the Utopic archive or are you using the development package in ppa:unity8-desktop-session-team/unity8-preview-lxc?

I'm using Trusty with the ppa:unity8-desktop-session-team/unity8-preview-lxc and I have the same issue.

Hi All,

I have confirmed that no IP address is getting assigned inside the Unity 8 container. I've opened bug #1427743 for the no IP address issue.

I will use this bug report to track not being able to set up a WiFi network connection inside Unity 8 LXC itself. Please follow the bug previously mentioned for the no IP issue.

Thanks!
