Slow opengl games under Unity

Bug Description
I've recently updated from Ubuntu 11.10 (64 bits) to 12.04, but I don't know if the problem occurred before as I used Gnome 3. After the update I tried Unity and I notice delays in opengl games (not just framerate drop, but even when limited at the same FPS it feels to pause repeatedly for fractions of a second).
Changing the window manager temporarily to metacity (or starting a session without Unity) solves the issue, as indicated here:

This thread is a bit old, but I think it describes the same problem. If this can't be solved, would it be possible to add a widget or command (cleaner than "metacity --replace && program && unity --replace") to enable/disable compiz (or whatever causes the problem)?
