Bug Description

After upgrade to 12.04 from 11.01, most of Unity doesn't work:
No launcher
No menu bars (File...) etc

On first boot after upgrade, got an error in Compiz; bug report tool wouldn't work.
Cannot use Alt+F2 to open a Run window
I had an icon for Google Chrome on my desktop before upgrade; I can access those applications
I had icons for on the desktop prior to upgrade; nothing else is accessible.
This includes terminal window!

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/990154/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

Yes, when I select "Ubuntu" before entering my password, the
system "attempts" to run Unity. What I see is a black screen
with a mouse pointer. If I try right-clicking, the screen will
briefly turn blue before returning to black.

Ctrl+alt+F1 does bring up a terminal window with a shell, so I
can run shell commands. Tried to get to a reboot with
sudo shutdown 1
but the system hung before powering down.

I am able to use the computer normally if I select the option
"Ubuntu 2D" at login time; that is how I am able to access
Evolution right now to return this email.
