Unable to login to standard ubuntu session

Bug Description
I'm unable to login to the standard Ubuntu session; one of two things happen
a) background appears but nothing else
b) returned back to login screen
Ubuntu-2d is fine.
Guest with standard Ubuntu session appears to be OK as well.
Was working find until I rebooted this morning after apply most recent updates to precise.
