Bug Description

Hardware profile:
http://suaserve.com/webdocs/hardwareprofile.html

Release:
Precise 12.04

Package (I believe):
unity-2d-launcher:
  Installed: 5.2.1-0ubuntu2
  Candidate: 5.2.1-0ubuntu2
  Version table:
 *** 5.2.1-0ubuntu2 0
        500 http://gb.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise/main i386 Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Apologies if I have selected the incorrect package as I am not 100% sure whether the panel is run under unity-2d-launcher; the attached screenshot will hopefully clear it up if not!

- 12.04 has previously loaded with the left-hand panel displayed until an application window is loaded, at which point it would auto-hide
- Today this stopped happening and the panel remained permanently visible in the foreground of active windows (see screenshot); reboot did not resolve
- workaround was to install compizconfig-settings-manager and change the display setting under Desktop > Ubuntu Unity Plugin to Autohide
- Since uninstalling compizconfig-settings-manager again, the panel is sometimes autohiding, sometimes not; any suggestions on logs/other info I could grab to get more detail on what's going on would be great!

Can you login to guest session and test there if its still an issue. The thing that you should now is that it is the new behavior for the launcher to not hide by default./

Am now in Guest session and here it is not intermittent but consistently hiding active windows (I have not attempted workaround via Compiz Config Manager here). Is the default meant to be to shift/resize active windows to keep both panel and window fully visible, or to let the panel sit on top at all times? The latter seems somewhat silly if you ask me. :) Screenshot attached of what I'm seeing when in Terminal!

I believe this might be a duplicate of #944228. The description there contains valuable input on how to reproduce the issue. I was able to reproduce it as follows:

- open up multiple gnome terminals
- tap the icon twice, the expose effect will be triggered
- after the expose effect, the panel won't hide anymore

An addition that the package referenced in this issue is actually unity-2d-panel. I am going to disable autostart in /usr/share/applications/unity-2d-shell.desktop to manually debug.

Restarting the process seems to get rid of the issue somehow. I wonder if this could this be some type of initialization or initial condition type of an issue.

Can you see if you still experience this issue after invoking ``pkill unity-2d-shell'' from the terminal? (don't disable autostart in unity-2d-shell.desktop)

Thanks for the bug report. Is that still an issue for you Ubuntu 12.04 with all updates applied? Can you please test that and let us know?
