Bug Description

I am using a Tango styled icon for Firefox via ~/.icons/hicolor/ and it is being rendered quite oddly in Unity. I did have only a 48px version, which previously only looked ugly in the dash, as it was getting scaled up. To resolve that, I found a larger version (512px to be exact), and stuck it in the scalable directory in the hicolor theme. However, now it seems that the 512px version is being used everywhere (including the launcher, which is configured to use 32px icons, and should really be scaling down the 48px). However, it generally renders fine in the launcher, if a bit prickly due to the massive downscaling.

In the dash, though, the icons are very weird. I am not quite sure how to explain it, but am attaching a couple screenshots to show what is happening. On the main dash screen, it seems to be rendering only part of the icon, out of its center, albeit not square. On the "more apps" screens, it is rendering the center (I think), of the icon as a square, but partially transparent, and blurred, as a background, with the scaled down full icon correctly rendered on top of this odd background.

Have you tried updating the gtk icon cache? It often fixes issues like these.

Bilal, yes. This only happened after I copied in the giant version of the icon to my theme, and updated the cache. It also seems that Unity is also somewhat unreliable at handling icons otherwise. I've since added some other icons to my local hicolor theme, and updated the cache, though the correct icon is not showing up in the panel.

This still occurs on current Ubuntu 12.04 updates as of today. I also see a similar issue with the Audacity icon now, after I've added a large icon for it. However, it seems impossible to get the "home" screen in the dash now. It seems to always open with the last search I made. Is the home screen just gone now?

thanks for your bug report. Is that still an issue in Ubuntu 12.04? Can you please test that and let us know? (please also attach a latest screenshot if that's the case)
