Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

Hi Sebastien

The answer to your questions.

1. Since I switched to 11.04 3d just stopped working, there was no way to enable 3d effects I was having back in 10.10. Additional drivers used to tell me nvidia-driver was INSTALLED BUT NOT IN USE. After updating to 11.10 it's INSTALLED AND IN USE. But 3d effects are still unavailable. And what's more, System Information says my graphic card is "unknown" (???).

2. Having 3d effects I enjoyed back in 10.10.

3. No 3d effects, stuck in 2d after 11.04.

I hope this is sufficient for you to understand my problem.

Greetings

@Alessandro: The Visual Effects tab doesn't exist anymore since 11.04 . By saying "stuck in 2D" do you mean to say you're using Unity 2D?

Could you please upload a screenshot of your desktop so that we can find out whether you're using Unity 2D or 3D? From what I'm guessing, Unity 3D and compiz are running happily on your computer, but you are unaware of it, and you're thinking that the effects are off, while in fact they're on by default.

There's no need to guess here, the apport data clearly states that Compiz and Unity 3D are running on your computer. So graphics effects ARE on, just the Visual Effects tab is not there in the Appearance properties. This is normal, since we deliberately removed it in 11.04.

You can instead configure graphic effects settings using CCSM (install compizconfig-settings-manager and then launch CCSM through the Unity Dash).

As for the graphics card being unknown, its normal on 11.10 because of a missing dependency (cannot remember the name of the package now, but I also had the error). No need to worry about it.

Hi Bilal,

I installed compiz as you suggested I should do, the only effect I found activated was "Window Decorations", if I try to turn on other effects, Unity just stops working and I'm forced to reset (manually because buttons have become invisible).

Incidentally, if I try to activate "Window Deformation" Compiz tells me that "Snapping Windows" already provides the same functionality. However my windows do NOT deformate, for certain.

I also uploaded a screen shot of my desktop, as you can see no transparencies.

Greetings

Hi, you should cancel this bug report because after a fresh install of 12.04 3d now works well. I have all of the Compiz effects working now. Even the cube.
Bye
