Bug Description

Since updating to Oneiric at Beta 1 and through all updates until today, Unity has become very slow in two different systems of mine in shuttiing down. I have some programs running, for instance conky, but I tried to close them down before shutting down and there is no change.

I also tried a workaround reported to speed up shutdown at unity 2d, which is giving from a terminal:
/usr/lib/indicator-session/gtk-logout-helper --logout

but it does not help.

There is a similar but in unity 2D: bug 812104

I've seen also comment on a forum that purging lightdm speeds up the shutdown time, but I haven't tried that.

It seems an issue related with lightdm. At some forums I'ven seen people reporting that purging lightdm makes the shutdown very fast.

In my case "sudo reboot" closes the system quite fast, and in the case of the system that does not shut down, it does shut it down.

I think it seems to be related to Network Manager. I replaced it with Wicd and shutdown/reboot is as fast as it used to be. And when you have a look at the console text while shutting down you can see a lot of lines concerning Network Manager. Still trying to log that text.

I experience this as well on a relatively fast laptop, but the problem is not really when shutting down; it's when logging out. That's why "gtk-logout-helper --logout" is slow as well.

summary: - Unity slow at shutting down
+ Unity slow at logout/shutting down

Also, in my case stopping NetworkManager (via 'service network-manager stop') didn't help; logging out was equally slow.

May be just stopping NetworkManager isn't enough. I did the replacement with wicd on to different laptops and they are both fast at shutdowwn again. For me the console messages looked like this: 'nm-dispatcher.action: Caught signal 15, shutting down'.

I can confirm this bug in a Desktop Pentium 4 3.4GHz, 2GB RAM, 500GB HDD ATI Radeon 9800 with Oneiric 32bits, and Laptop HP 6735s AMD Turion RM-72, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD and ATI Radeon HD 3200 with Oneiric 64bits. This bug does not ocurr with LXDE desktop session, logout/reboot/shutdown goes in a snap, but not when unity is on.

In my case this seems to be related to my local user. When using other users the logout is pretty fast, even with network-manager running and connected to a wifi-network. Has anybody tried logging out with a different user to see if it's slow as well?

It turns out the delay when logging out, in my case, was because of bug 880299.

@salgado, you are right, if I kill Tomboy before logging out this problem disappears. So I close this report and subscribe to bug 880299. Please anybody else affected by slow log out not related to Tomboy feel free to open a new bug.
