Bug Description

I am using Ubuntu Oneiric Beta2 with the updates of 27th September. I installed skype skype:i386 2.2.0.35-0oneiric2 via the software center. If I start it, the icon appears in the unity panel. When I click on the x (close) in the skype window, skype and the icon disappear (as expected). However, when I restart skype, it tells me that another instance of skype is already running.

Also, if I minimize it, a click on the unity skype icon does not maximize skype only, if focus has been layed on some other window before.

The first one is not a bug, clicking on x lets Skype disappear but it's still open. You have to click on the small Skype icon at the bottom and close it. Or close it over the file menu...

The second one is a bug with the unity panel and it is affected to many applications, banshee for example. When you minimize an application, compiz crashes sometimes.

Pretty important bug, as I cannot use Skype anymore, not being able to pop it up! And I guess skype is used by a lot of people right now...

It seems that restarting unity helps, at least on my laptop.

I started skype today and it appeared. Since few days I also have a second battery indicator, smaller than the default one.

the second battery is probably because you whitelisted all systray and gnome-settings-daemon displays a systray icon for the GNOME fallback session

@Reinhard: it is enough to shut down Skype and restart it again:

In a terminal windown type

$ killall skype

And then restart Skype from applications or typing it into an Alt+F2 window.

The Skype icon reappears on the panel... for a while at least... But this is a less time-consuming version, and you don' t have to restart all the applications you've been using. This works for other apps the icons of which tend to disappear from the panel, like mail-notification.

I can confirm that this often helps. For me, restarting unity is more
reliable.

I have exactly the same problem as described by Muhammad running gnome-shell. I use skype very often, so killing and restarting skype is not an option for a longer time. Hope there is a way to fix this bug. If the developers need further information, please let us know... Thanks!

Hi. I had this problem as soon as I upgraded to Oneiric. Completely removing my current installation of skype and then installing skype:i386 2.2.0.35-0oneiric2 gave me a the Skype icon in the notification area as expected. I hope this helps.

Same problem here, when installed from deb (64bit from skype website).
Reinstallation to skype:i386 package helped (thanks to Shavak).

Not the same but similar: I can give a console command for whitelist without Skype in it, or I can change it in Dconf Editor - Skype icon is always in systray when it's running, and I can't remove it.

I've Ubuntu 11.10 (64bit version) and I was suffering the same bug here. I've removed Skype 64bit (which I downloaded from Skype website) and installed the package skype:i386 2.2.0.35-0oneiric2 from Software Center.
Now Skype doesn't run at all..

@KamikazE:
start your newly installed skype:i386 from within a terminal and look what (:i386-) libs skype is missing and install them. That normaly fixes the "skype does not work at all" issue ;-)

Skype 4.0 indeed fixes this. I think this can be marked as invalid for Unity
