I have the same symptoms are a similar graphic card. If I disable the Unity plugin in CSM (and enabled awn to have a dock) everything is back to normal. So it looks like a unity issue.

It's hard to reproduce since it doesn't happen at boot time but after I spend some time with the machine. Disabling and enabling Unity in CSM seems to help.

On another machine (with ATI graphics) I had to switch to Unity 2d to get a usable machine

My problem seems to be related to java, cpu usage is only high when some java program is running. So it's likely a new bug.

Thanks for the bug report. Is that still an issue for you Ubuntu 12.04 with all updates applied? Can you please test that and let us know?
