Bug Description

The VLC menu's are very disfunctional under Unity. If you start VLC, then search for mp3 or mpg files to play there usually is no way to get back to actually viewing the moving you are left at the VLC "list" screen which displays the list of files to be played but there is no control or button to return to actually to the VLC screen showing the movie.

This is very different behavior from VLC on 10.10 Gnome desktop

Hi, could you please provide numbered steps to reproduce? I'm trying here, but don't quite understand where you are when you mention "no way to get back".

Here's what I'm doing so far:
1. Open VLC player
2. Click on the menu above, and hit "open file"

its not consistent.

If I start VLC then select to "add files" I can add one or more .mp3 or
.mpg files to VLC's play list.

Sometimes it just gets stuck at the play list with no way to get back to
viewing a movie if that's whats playing. Sometimes, the little "list" icon
at the top changes to allow you to toggle back and forth (from view to the
play list and back) sometimes it doesn't.

I also have found that I can't seem to start a 2nd VLC once its launched
once.

Why on Unity isn't there a Right-Click option to start another instance of
whatever app a Launch bar icon represents.

I found that if I start a terminal I can't start another terminal unless I
so a search for the Terminal Application and launch it that way versus just
being able to right-click on the Terminal Launcher icon again.

I know Unity is new and some of the app packages will straighten some of
this out before 11.10. Its been pretty good so far but there are some
niggling problems like these I've seen.

What do you exactly refer to when you say 'menus'?

You know I wish I can figure out (under Unity) how better to capture some of
this. Unfortunately, things I used to be able to do in previous ubuntu
under gnome 2 don't seem to be so easy now under Unity.

Explaining it in words is almost as much as I can do.

1) I start VLC
2) VLC displays an empty PLAY LIST
3) I right-click on the play list for ADD A FILE
4) browse and pick say an MPEG file to "play"
5) at that point SOMETIMES VLC will return an start showing the movie
SOMETIMES it won't ... the movie IS playing BUT I'm left at the PLAY LIST
screen with no apparent way to get back to the VLC
screen showing the Movie I'd selected.
-or-
5.1) after doing step 4 VLC returns to #5 but instead of being full screen
display of the PLAY LIST... VLC is actually just slightly LESS than full
screen (on the top of the VLC window only).
When this happens ... I lose all mouse click response in Unity. What
I mean by that is that I cannot get the mouse to display the Unity Launcher
any longer, I can't click on the little Ubuntu symbol in
the Upper Left of the Window to display the Apps/Search (whatever its
called) panel. I've had times when my only alternative was to Click the
upper right Switch and select LOG OUT and then LOG
      back in.

IF I could figure out how to get a screen capture while this is going on I
would be the non-responsiveness means I can't even bring up the snapshot
tool to do so

So far VLC is the only app I've had this kind of strange behaviour with.

sorry.
