Bug Description

Some times when I use Libreoffice-calc, some movements of the spreadsheet or the mouse invoke the sidebar launcher to appear. The sidebar will not disappear unless I close calc. this happens on a fresh installation of 11.04 natty, Gnome 2.32.1 kernel 2.6.38-8-generic, both with xorg graphic driver or ATI driver.

Hanan,

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.

Could you elaborate on the steps you take to make this problem happen?

I managed to make the Unity dash appear by doing the following:

1- Open calc, unmaximize it
2- type some text in the input line (next to the blue checkmark)
3- Use the mouse to highlight text in the input line (so far I've only managed to get this to happen on the input line, not on a cell)

When doing this, the Unity dash appears, but it hides again as soon as I let go of the mouse button.

This is different from what you observed, so I'd appreciate if you could provide the steps you take to make it happen, and whether you can confirm that the dash doesn't auto-hide (even if you move your mouse to the dash and then back elsewhere in your screen).

Thanks!

Hi
Now, after I reported the bug, it seems less frequent so I can not determine
all the conditions for this bug to happen. However:

   - I have opened an ods file on a remote linux server with a local calc.
   - when i moved the slider left, the side bar appeared.
   - It goes away only when i close all libreoffice applications.
   - I think it happened also with a local ods file but i haven't been able
   to repeat it.
   - it does not happen all the times
   - it happened before also with other movements of the spreadsheet or the
mouse but i can not recall exactly what movement, I will try to catch the
   exact movement when it happens.
   - The spreadsheet is always maximised when it happens, but resizing
after the sidebar appearance does not close it.
   - The dash doesn't auto-hide (even if I move my mouse to the dash and
then back elsewhere in my screen).

Thank you for the replay

Hi Hanan,

I have tried to replicate the behavior you describe, on both ATI and Intel graphics chipsets, but I've been unable to do so.

I have a couple of steps I'd like to ask you to perform.

1- Could you run the following command on a terminal, to collect information pertaining to your version of Unity:

apport-collect 792501

2- Could you tell me what happens if, when you get the "stuck" Unity dash, you press the "super" (or Windows) key to show the Unity panel, and then press it again to make the panel go away?

3- Could you perform this test, intended to verify whether the issue is LibreOffice-specific?
a- Open the text editor (gedit).
   b- Type some text.
c- Highlight a portion of the text you typed.
   d- Drag the selected text.

the Unity dash should appear when you're dragging the text, but should re-hide once you release the mouse button.

Thanks!

Hello Daniel

   - I have run apport-collect 792501- do i need to send some thing to you
   or it is done automatic?
   - the super key does not make a difference. When the side dash is stuck
it brings up the shortcuts menu but does not effect the side dash
   - the gedit behaves as you predicted

thank you for your time
Hanan

The problem is not LibreOffice-specific, as it also occurs with Opera when you drag text from the address bar, search bar or from a web site.
In LibreOffice Impress, dragging around the text boxes in the presentation works fine, but once you double-click on the font selection input field, the sidebar gets stuck again.

This is really irritating because you either need to close the application or un-maximize the window and manually move/resize it such that it is no longer covered by the side bar. As long as this problem is not resolved, it would already be helpful if we could either lock the sidebar (and thereby reduce the display space available for applications) or disable it entirely.

Hello,

I'm setting this bug as a duplicate of #769703 as it appears to be the same problem and even affects the same applications; the primary bug talks about Opera and LibreOffice. It appears to indeed be a generic issue with Unity and some applications, mainly those using the Qt toolkit (Opera for instance).

Thanks!
