I use the gnome desktop, but I think this may be an issue at the x window level. Maybe gtk as that is the layer above? In my usual case I am launching by double clicking on a media file and the application can take up to 20 seconds to load. I often do not know whether I double clicked fast enough and do it again leading to multiple copies of the application opening (which leads to a separate set of issues) In other operating systems this is normally handled by immediately showing an hour glass icon or similar while the application is opened. Ubuntu 11.04, default setup except desktop effects are turned off. I'm not sure if this is easy to fix or not.
