Bug Description

Binary package hint: xorg

The top menu bar has corrupted. No icon or text is legible. However the items in the bar still work. For example, I can click where the time display *was* and I get the calendar dropdown. But the time is not visible on the menu bar anymore -- just a graduated stippled corruption. I also notice a "blank" icon space in the unity bar left of screen - -not sure if that is related. When I do the workspace switcher, the menu bar on those 4 screens is identically corrupt. I'd previously seen the corruption on the workspace switch mini-screens, but now it's on my main screen too.

I think this may be the same thing I'm seeing, except when the menu portion of the global menu bar gets corrupted, it is usually replaced by some portion of my desktop. Screenshot attached.

I am using an NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT with the binary driver version 270.41.06-0ubuntu1.

This seems to happen when I screw around with Compiz Config too much. For instance, the last time it happened after I activated then deactivated the Widgets Layer.

[Unity guys should look at this before we treat it as a driver issue, to rule out simple application corruption, since from the report it appears to be localized to just the panel]

I get exactly the same problem on my machine, usually after i play around with the Compiz settings.

Only way to get the menu bar back is to log out and log back in again. Locking/unlocking the screen, starting/stopping the screensaver, suspending/resuming the machine all does not work.

The menubar is perfectly functional (can interact with menus, etc), just the bar is unreadable.

System report attached.

I can now reproduce this bug. It's *definitely* a Compiz related bug.
Simply go to compiz settings manager and enable wobbly windows.
Instant top-menu bar corruption. For me, anyway.
Cheers

I also experienced this. I had the full Unity crash, and recovered with something like this - the key was "unity --reset"
http://ubuntu4beginners.blogspot.com/2011/04/missing-top-and-side-panels-in-unity.html
Then enabled desktop cube with these instructions, which was fine:
http://ubuntu4beginners.blogspot.com/2011/05/enable-desktop-cube-in-unity-ubuntu.html
Then checked "Notification" in ccsm, which crashed Unity. "sudo service gdm restart" fixed it. Then I enabled "Shift Switcher" and the menu bar got corrupted. Screenshot attached.

Interestingly, it displays correctly while rotating the cube, but reverts to garbage when the rotation ends.
