Bug Description

Binary package hint: unity

This might be related to the number shortcuts for the launcher shortcuts, but it was annoying and took me a bit to figure out why it wasn't hiding.

Thanks for your bug report and help to make unity better.

Is this reproduceable? Can you please find a reproducible test case like:
1. log to the ubuntu session
2. press numlock
3. put a window under the launcher…

This kind of reproducible steps will help us to debug the issue :)
Thanks a lot!

Hi,

got the same issue with K3B. While k3b burns a CD the launcher doesn't hide automatically.
I have Chrome-Browser open, too (maximized) - if I switch from k3b to Chrome the launcher doesn't hide - but after I press the num-lock button - it will.

ok - here again with 1,2,3

1. open Chrome-Browser maximized
2. open k3b and burn a CD
3. switch to Chrome-Browser (sidebar is still open)
4. press "num-lock" (sidebar hides)

I hope this helps (sorry, my English is not so well).

no worry about your English :)
Thanks for the feedback.

Can someone confirm this? I have neither a burner handy not a num-lock touch on my laptop
(You told maximized, not fullscreen, right?)

That's interesting. I certainly wasn't burning any CDs, but I did have Chrome Browser open. I tried but couldn't get it to happen again, I will post again if I can pin down some steps.

Yes,

it was maximized - I did not use the "fullscreen" option of Chrome.

Just testet again without Chrome:

1. open Evolution (Mail)
2. open k3b
3. prepare a new data project (the launcher comes to the front)
4. go back to Evolution and the launcher's still in the front
5. press "num-lock" and the launcher hides

I am having the same problem.
If num lock is on when I launch a new program (tested with R-Studio, Nautilus, gnome system monitor & ubuntu software centre) unity does not hide.
As soon as I press the num lock key, it hides.
Intermittently the hiding appears to be jamming when I switch to an already running program with unity and num lock on, but this is not consistent and I haven't been able to find a pattern to it.

I had been looking for a solution to this really annoying problem (unity doesn't hide) and I bumped into this bug report.

I tried pressing numlock and unity finally disappeared.
It's still annoying, but at least there is a temporary workaround.

I can reproduce this behaviour consistently. For me it is occurring with any new program launch(gedit, Thunderbird, Firefox), and I am not running any of the previously listed programs (Chrome, K4B, Evolution). The unity launcher does not stick when simply selecting an already open program. Closing a running program while numlock is active also causes the launcher to show and stick.

Even more interesting is that if Nautilus is active and in focus, pressing turning on num lock shows the unity launcher even without putting my mouse anywhere near it. Toggling off numlock hides the unity bar. This can be repeated any number of times.

I think we should look at the dependencies of k3b. It didn't occur on my computer until I installed it and it seems to be reproducible with k3b. It could be a KDE dependency that could be causing it.

BTW, even I switched NumLock off and Unity launcher disappeared, the area where Unity launcher WAS placed IS UNCLICKABLE. I cannot select or click at this area =\

I think this can be a nice bitesize bug (in addition to the fact that I only have laptops, and the equivalent of NumLock here doesn't reproduce it).

Adding to the bitesize bug list if someone wants to dive into that code, it would be an awesome first contribution :)

I have the same problem. I haven't installed much on this system. I have Chromium, but I don't know of any KDE application that I've installed. I am using a laptop, but it does have a full size num pad. This laptop has an ATI graphics card (1680x1050). I've also had this problem on my desktop computer with an Nvidia card with dual monitors (1920x1080 primary, 1280x1024 secondary to the left). The work around that I had to use before I found this num lock bug was to use the Compiz settings for Unity to make it never hide. I can confirm most of the behavior described here.

I find "Autohide" also solve the issue, it only occurs with one of the doge (active?) window setting.

FYI on how to change the hide mode of the unity launcher:
1) install Advanced Desktop Effects Settings (ccsm) from the Ubuntu Software Center
2) Open System Settings from the shutdown/logoff menu
3) Select CompizConfig Settings Manager
4) Click the Ubuntu Unity Pugin under Desktop
5) Change Hide launcher to "Autohide" or "Never"

Just a question i want to ask, with me unity in general acts stupid with focus handling, i could switch to a window but it doesn't gain focus unless i click the window it self,
like if i choose something from the messaging menu or rhythmbox from the sound menu, or i think any item from the panel in general, it pops up but it doesn't gain foucs, and i think the launcher by default is set to dodge active window ? so that might be the issue, that a smaller window is launched but didn't get focus, so launcher doesn't try to dodge it?
I'm not sure about what i'm saying is applicable here or not, so please anybody correct me if i'm wrong

The same for me. I was trying to find any information about how could I hide the launcher (it didn't hide even with 'autohide' option on) and I found this page. I tried to press numlock and the launcher magically hid.
I have also tried what computermacgyver says (with nautilus open and numlock on, unity appears even it was hidden before), and I had the same behaviour.

Since Launcher dodge behavior is now removed, should this bug be closed? I cannot replicated with numlock enabled alongside Launcher autohide behavior in Unity 5.8.0-0ubuntu2
