I experienced this once again on April 26 fully updated.

I don't experience this every time. I do use systray icons, this is how my settings looks like:

['JavaEmbeddedFrame', 'Mumble', 'Wine', 'Skype', 'hp-systray', 'mail-notification', 'update-manager', 'update-notifier', 'empathy']

Could you maybe post a video of the problem happening? Or further describe non-responsive? Do the clicks seem to be ignored? Does the indicator press in but no menu appear?

I have the same problem. On the attached screenshot you can see the indicator 'message' is pressed, but no menu appears. This is with systray deactivated. This problem seems to happen more often when the systray is activated. With systray activated the indicators is often completely unresponsive (no push in effect as seen in screenshot), except for the power menu. The indicator menus will work if I press the power indicator first, and then hover over my indicator of choice.

I forgot to mention: This problem also seems to affect the global menu when it occures (significantly less frequent with disabled systray) .

Here is my video. When you see the pointer resting for a while on an indicator it is becaused I clicked. See that when I click on the rightmost indicators then the leftmost start responding.

The screencast is a little strange because I have dual monitor. I couldn't use the "define screen area" option of gtk-recordmydesktop because paradoxically I couldn't click on the red circle indicator for that option (not responsive as the other leftmost indicators).

I just found something interesting.

When I have Mullvad (http://www.mullvad.et) active in the tray, I have to go to the date/time and them move right to get the tray menus to work. (like mentioned above)
When it is closed and not in the tray, everything works as it should.

Could it be that 3rd party applications somehow freezes the tray?

It seams like there are two issues at play here

1: some times menus do not open (I had this bug but it was marked as invalid in alpha)

2: systray obscures clicks near them.

I would agree both both issue 1 and 2. It seems be one of the or a combo.

When I start Mullvad, it only opens 1/8th of the image, I only see a grey mark instead of the square icon. It is only that application that does that, and i have sent mail to the developer about that one.

Regarding my error, all right-click options are gone when that app (and maybe other 3rd party apps?) are running in the tray.
One 3rd party application that does NOT effect the tray in this way, is Deluge.

I started noticing that this is also affecting the global menu (not responsive) until the date or the logout indicator is clicked on the right of the Unity panel.

I just found something out: When I removed Dropbox from the tray, it all works again. Dropbox has made an icon-shortcut that fits the theme, and whenthat is removed everything seems to work!
Do you guys have Dropbox installed?

yes I have dropbox installed but I cannot see the icon, perhaps it doesn't even start on login

I have to say that actually it's not even installed on my pc so I tend to exclude your theory in my case.

magowiz that is a seporat issue (bug #759129) and appears with all non-indicator tray icon programs.

After I removed the Dropbox icon, I do not have this issue anymore (or, at the moment anyways ;) )
It has worked normal for almost a week (I really wanted to try it before telling anyone to be sure).

Must be some sort of 3rd party issue?

@AndreaZ: I have Dropbox installed and running and am not experiencing the issue. Before you removed Dropbox, did you try removing any other indicator? Just asking whether the issues disappeared because you removed Dropbox, or because you removed an (/any) icon...

I was experiencing the issue after setting 'desktop/unity/panel/systray-whitelist' to '[all]' (using dconf-editor). The issue stopped when I changed it to ['JavaEmbeddedFrame', 'Mumble', 'Wine', 'Skype', 'hp-systray', 'scp-dbus-service', 'tracker', 'Do', 'guake', 'SWT', 'update-notifier'].
I've now not seen the problem in weeks...

All the best

I only removed Dropbox (after "Dropboxgate" with thier "privacy policy").
I am now trying Spideroak which works superb, nothing goes wrong with the indicator area.

Dropbox is a tray icon and not an indicator, I have had both issues on different systems (one vanilla and it was the issue not relating to tray icons) they are distinctively different but the description can seem very similar.

This affects me as well, and many times even the logout menu won't work. I have to click on each and every tray icon sometimes multiple times before one finally decides to open. This is a major usability problem, I don't understand why its importance was rated "low".

I have nearly the same problem. Sometimes, when I want to click any indicator, it doesn't respond (whether to right- nor to left-click). The only indicators, which are responding, are the ones which are pre-installed in unity (Ubuntu One, clock, logout). I need to click on one of those first, the hover the other indicators to left to see their menus.
