Do you have the packages unity-place-files and unity-place-applications installed?

Run the following command on a terminal and paste the output here, please:

sudo apt-get install unity-place-files unity-place-applications

Thank you a lot, Marco, your hint fixed unity.

I think that those packages have to be installed on upgrade by default or unity becomes useless (at least the unity-place-applications package).

So i bet i have to change this title to "unity-place-applications" installed by default on upgrade (???)

mvo: what logs are needed from the upgrade process to debug how/why this may have happened?

I've read all the dpkg logs and there is no entry for "unity-place-applications".
My opinion is that, before upgrade, i have installed unity (netbook remix version) and upgrading the unity* packages dpkg doesn't "think" that "unity-place-application" is a necessary package.
