Visual artifacts on starting unity: launcher floating around

See attached video, which shows the launcher briefly floating in the middle of the desktop before it is redrawn on the left side of the display.
This seems to be a regression. These artifacts were not present last week.
This is repeatable every time I log in and also any time I run compiz --replace .

Also, this misplaced launcher, as seen in the video, shows tooltips, etc. It is active, applications can also be launched from it during the < 1 second that it is floating in the middle of the desktop before it is redrawn on the left of the display.

I see this when using unity with experimental nvidia drivers.
