Bug Description

Binary package hint: unity

I just installed Ubuntu 11.04, and when I start up the system unity doesn't show up. I didn't need do anything.
The top bar is translucent but I don't see absolutely nothing, but when I click on it a menu shows up (the options of menu like save, preferences, not the topbar).
Side Bar is completely invisible, but when I click somewhere where the bar should be a program starts, like LibreOffice or Ubuntu One.

I have just the same issue with Unity (3d). My video card is an Intel GMA 945, and compiz itself, without the unity plugin works just fine.
I can provide more details if needed.

can you try to run update manager and update your unity to 3.8.4 and check if the issue is fixed there also it would be really helpful if you could try to login into a guest session and see if unity works there.

Hi.
I already have updated Unity to 3.8.4 version and this issue continue here with my current user.
I tried now to login into a guest session and Unity started just fine, with everything working.

I don't know if this information will be helpful but in my installation I did a clean setup and my HOME folder was the same a used in Ubuntu 10.04 but I did clean all the config folders, and kept just the standard folders and created by myself.

Thank you.

Hi,

I can say the same thing. Also using 3.8.4 (as seen below), however the issue is still there.

unity 3.8.4-0ubuntu1
unity-asset-pool 0.8.18-0ubuntu2
unity-common 3.8.4-0ubuntu1
unity-place-applications 0.2.44-0ubuntu1
unity-place-files 0.5.46-0ubuntu2

If I switch to guest account, unity works.
Mine is not a clean install, but an upgrade from maverick.

Thanks,
Balint

Any update on this? By the question regarding the guest login I suspected that you may have a lead on what is causing this. If I can give you any information about the system I use, please ask.

Thanks!

I hadfixed the problem with Unity here.

Here I have to delete (or rename) these files:
.dmrc
.gtk-bookmarks
.ICEauthority
.profile
.xscreensaver
.xsession-errors
.esd_auth

If I don't delete these files Unity interface does not appear in my user.
In my case, when I had installed Ubuntu 11.04 I didn't have formated my home folder.

Cleaning those files were not enough for me, but creating a new home folder fixed it. Probably some leftover configuration was causing the issue, though I'm not sure whic one. Thanks for the info!

You could try clean these folders:
.gnome2
.config
.compiz
.gvfs

Instead of deleting these folder you should just rename it for something like ".gnome2.old".

Deleting it you will loose almost all your configuration on dekstop. Thats why you should just rename.

Hi, I have the same problem as the original post. I have tried to backup and rename the folders mentioned in the previous post, but that did not get Unity working. I'm not sure where the files mentioned in post #10 are located. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

(I am running an Asus EEE PC 1005 HA and upgraded from Maverick, if any of that matters.)

For me what helped was to re-create my home directory. Unfortunately I don't
know specific files or directories that need to be removed for unity to
start working. I suggest you back up your home folder, create an empty
directory instead of it, copy files from /etc/skel to your new home
directory, then after unity starts working, move things back. You will need
to reconfigure your session, but well, that shouldn't be such a big deal.

Good luck,
Balint

I tried emptying my directory and adding the file in /etc/skel to it, but it prevented anything from loading, and I had to move my home files back to get the desktop to work at all. I also found and renamed the files mentioned in post #10, but nothing seemed to change. Right now I'm back where I started, except every time I try to start a session I get informed that Ubuntu cannot update the ICEauthority file (even when the file is properly named and in the right place).

If nothing loaded, it may have been caused by your user not having proper
permissions on the new home directory. If you created it using root, this
may be the case. I'd suggest you try it again:

log out of gnome
switch to console
mv /home/<username> /home/<username>.old
mkdir /home/<username>/
cp -pr /etc/skel /home/<username>/
chown -R <username>:<username> /home/<username>
now log back in to gnome using gdm

Sorry for not being able to provide the exact config directory that is
causing the issue.

Regards,
Balint
