I have just updated everything to the latest again...(apt-get dist-upgrade) and was able to reproduce the problem doing exactly the same thing..
in CCSM Enable (or disable) Unity MT Grab Handles... Causes Compiz to mass distort and flicker and crash and restart, twice... which duplicates everything on my desktop
