Bug Description

HPLIP's hp-systray (binary package hplip-gui, in main) is a notification area applet and as the notification area is replaced by application indicators on Unity desktops (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DesktopExperienceTeam/ApplicationIndicators) it does not work any more on those desktops (last comments of bug 335662). There were done several efforts to adapt hp-systray, but all without success (bug 497877). The upstream developers of HPLIP at HP do not work at all on application indicator support for hp-systray as most distributions use a normal notification area. In addition, we cannot drop hp-systray as it is also a user daemon to handle fax print queues via D-Bus.

Therefore I want to ask for whitelisting hp-systray to make it working on a Unity desktop without needing any patches and adaptions.

so as discussed on IRC, Qt has no way to use the indicators without adding a depends on libkde so that needs to be whitelisted until someone comes with a qt way to speak to indicators
