Bug Description

Binary package hint: unity

The "Desktop" placeholder menubar that appears on Unity when no window is focused has no title. This looks inconsistent, makes harder for the user to know that a placeholder menubar exists in the first place and leaves an awkward left gap when the menu is being shown. This could be solved by simply placing a "Desktop" title there, or maybe "File Manager" to be consistent with Nautilus.

Desired solution:

- When no window is in focus (e.g. after logging in or after closing all windows), the word "Ubuntu Desktop" should be displayed in the top left of the Top Bar.

- There are no window controls ("Buttons") associated with the desktop, so mousing into the top left of the panel should continue to display "Ubuntu Desktop"

- The special version of the Nautilus menu for the desktop should be used when the pointer is over the panel (menu defined in a separate bug)

  https://launchpadlibrarian.net/79859220/launcher.png

it appears to be just a case of setting the string "Desktop" to appear in the top bar. My understanding would be that this needs to be string for a11y purposes, rather than an image of any sort. If an image/asset is required, could somebody provide some more context and I'll try to investigate.

Is there a patch for this yet? Can we please implement this using dgettext() and using the "gtk30" or "compiz" domains? Both of those already have a "Desktop" message ID and translations, and I think the "gtk30" should be fairly well translated. I'm ok with this release wise as long as it's not introduding yet another "Desktop" string into unity's PO template (on my system there are already 11 applications with that string).

The proposed patch uses the "nautilus" domain, which also sounds correct to me, given that it is the title of nautilus.

I think this only affects 1 screenshot, and that screenshots might not even be worth redoing for this so +1 from the Docs team to show Desktop. The sample screenshots in #5 and #6 are obviously from 11.04. Just checking that we're not actually bringing back the Ubuntu logo to the top bar.

Was this forwarded to the Translators yet?

No need, we'll use an existing string from Nautilus (that's what I
discussed above).

"Just checking that we're not actually bringing back the Ubuntu logo to the top bar."

Is it really a good idea to re-add the Ubuntu logo to the top bar? This makes it confusing for the docs to tell people to click the Ubuntu button to open the dash (which is exactly what we tell people to do!). And it's also confusing for Natty users who have gotten used to a Ubuntu logo in the top left corner acting very differently.

In fact, I'd go so far as to say at first look, I think adding the Ubuntu logo breaks our documentation two weeks after documentation string freeze.

Paul Sladen (sladen) wrote :

John: can we re-look at this per Jeremy's concerns and assess (version-to-version) whether it's a good idea. It appears to be a valid point that if the textual documentation suggests that somebody "click on the Ubuntu icon in the top corner" the presence of the second Ubuntu logo in some contexts breaks that.

Me three. Now the bar looks like having a nonfunctional bfb, which is very confusing for upgradings. I'd like to keep the old natty bfb where it was, but I guess it's not easy to convince you to move it out of the launcher again; I still don't understand the reasons for this at all, I thought you wanted to provide a consistent panel layout/title for applications, but by adding a dummy icon we now waste the space *and* have the functionality regression of moving the bfb into the launcher. Can we please revert either of these?

Is there actually an Ubuntu logo in the top bar now? Neil's original proposed screen shot (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/732016/+attachment/2366470/+files/Ubuntu_Desktop.png) has it, but I don't see it in current unity (4.20.0-0ubuntu1).

I don't think that looks terrible, per se, but it could definitely be confusing. If we need branding or the Ubuntu roundel, could we use the Ubuntu font to say "ubuntu Desktop" without requiring an image or destroying translations?

Adolfo Jayme Barrientos (fitojb) wrote :

IMHO, there is *no* need to add yet another Ubuntu logo. That’s overbranding, Ubuntu desktop is recognizable enough.

For example, please see the following image, and count how much times it says who’s the developer.

Do we really need this kind of UI redundancy?

I was unaware of this bug until now. My immediate reaction when I saw the Ubuntu logo in the panel was "hey, what's-that-do?" and clicking it. Then clicking it again, just to double check if it *really* didn't do anything.

Also considering that people upgrading from the Netbook LTS will go from having a button with the exact same look go from being their only and primary access to the system, to be an unresponsive icon.

And what should we do with translations?
If just to put "Ubuntu" + tr("Desktop") there, it will look bad, for example, in Russian there should be "Рабочий стол Ubuntu", not "Ubuntu рабочий стол".

I think the easiest way is to leave the "Desktop" label without the icon and include "Ubuntu" word during P cycle.

Adolfo Jayme Barrientos (fitojb) wrote :

Dmitry’s right. Another example: “Ubuntu Desktop” is translated to Spanish as “Escritorio de Ubuntu“ and not “Ubuntu Escritorio”. I don’t believe it’s a good idea to require new translations at this point, especially because this adds a highly visible new string that may not be translated in all languages in time for release.

Please remove the duplicate status from this bug. This and bug 865150 are not duplicates, they are different issues.

The reason why I'm asking this is bug 869586: I need to mark it as duplicate of this bug -- and it's definitely not a duplicate of bug 865150, since we don't have any Ubuntu logo in Unity 2D.

Revision history for this message
Martin Pitt (pitti) wrote :

Bug 865150 got retitled indeed, but with the current Unity you get a desktop title ("Desktop") without an icon, which is what it's supposed to be now. If it's still not working in unity-2d, then we can use bug 869586?

Revision history for this message
Alberto Mardegan (mardy) wrote :

Indeed I can also link bug 869586 to the branch we have, but I'm not sure if it will be handled correctly when releasing; and in any case it doesn't seem correct, formally. The fact is that we have two bugs:
- this, which says that the "Desktop" label should be added (unity-2d status: fix committed).
- bug 865150, which says that the logo should be removed (unity-2d status: not affected).

They are quite different, especially as far as Unity 2D is concerned. If you remove the duplicate status, then the bug will be "Fix released" for Unity, and "Fix committed" for Unity 2D, and I'll be able to mark all bugs that users will file (while our fix is not released, which might even not happen for Oneiric) as duplicates of this. Which seems all fine to me.

Sorry to be so picky :-)
