Bug Description

Natty Daily build as at a date 2011 January 03

Live CD boots but desktop does not fully appear.
No side icons, only the background graphic and Examples folder and Install Icon.
This makes the Live CD session *unusable*

lspci shows Intel 82865G

Note that this PC runs compiz ok from its fully installed Ubuntu 10.04, so its graphics are 3D capable.

I have just installed this build in the same PC and the desktop only shows the background graphic. no icons, or apps at all.
Alt F2 gives no response.

quit x using
RH-alt Printscreen k
login after choosing classic desktop, err, not so easy because no cursor shows.

Using Classic Desktop, get error windows, for example indicator applet quit, reload, also clock, also notification area, wastebasket, workspace switcher, window list, show desktop, all error, then reloaded.

Top and bottom panels now appear, but no mouse cursor.
When a window is closed, it stays but shows as transparent.

Hi, thanks for reporting this, can you get into a tty once you have your desktop background (ctrl+alt+f2) and run unity? you should get some useful output from that, you can switch back with ctrl+alt+f7

also could you run "apport-collect 696999" to collect information so this bug report will be useful

I can confirm this somewhat:

Now it gives a message that my card isn't supported for Unity. Good enough (is it supposed to be unsupported?). But when using "Ubuntu classic (no effects)" I get graphic corruption at the taskbars and menus. Jaunty worked fine. I do also get occasional freezes (can move mouse, but that's all, doesn't respond to keyboard).

Is there anything I can do to help sort this out?

Upon further investigation, the UI will freeze (or go blank and come back) when it presents a new dialog (e.g. give sudo rights, screenshot dialog etc). Launching normal programs works.

I have this message when I want log into Ubuntu session:

""It seems that you do not have the hardware required to run Unity. Please choose the Ubuntu Classic at the login screen and you will be using the traditional environment.""

I can only login to Ubuntu classic (no effects) session. All others sessions don't start.

Even if 3D is supported in the previous versions, we're forced to use Unity-2d In Natty.

The intel 82865G supports Open GL up to 1.3. Unity requires 1.4+, and fall back to 2D is the expected behavior.
You'll find the requirements of Unity at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DesktopExperienceTeam/UnityHardwareRequirements

I'm closing this report. Don't hesitate to report any new bug.

I can confirm this bug too. I didn't try Unity becaused 865G is not supported. But, I can't login to gnome classic desktop with compiz enabled. It's a lot buggy, and the whole screen has graphic corruption. When I tried logging into gnome classic with no effects, it's a lot usable. Yet you see, graphic corruption as well as the screen flashing once in a while. This especially happens while browsing the web either using Chrome or Firefox.

Btw, just our of curiosity, has Canonical or the Ubuntu community stopped supporting gnome classic?

Just being able to get a workable gnome desktop with the latest natty 11.04 live CD would be good.

Ok, there's not going to be Unity support for this Intel graphics chip because it's deemed too old, but the corrupt graphics on the gnome classic desktop which it defaults to with this graphics chip makes this un-installable.
