Bug Description

I have a gedit shortcut in my Launcher, as you can see in my first screenshot.

Usually I launch it from there.

However, if I launch gedit from a terminal, or when another application launches gedit (presumably by launching the default text editor), if I don't have a gedit instance already open, it generates a new separate icon in Launcher, as shown in the second screenshot, instead of highlighting the existing launcher icon as it should.

What I have described above has always happened, at least as far as I can remember.

However, right now I am observing something worse and new:
I'm double-clicking on a text file icon in Nautilus to open it in gedit. Normally this would highlight the existing launcher icon for gedit as expected and as shown in my first screenshot. However, now, the expected icon flashes for a fraction of a second, but then the new one is created as shown in my second screenshot.

I don't know if this has to do with the fact that the first time I launched gedit since I booted this time was from a terminal.

The whole thing is pathetic.
