Cannot click on indicators when a VirtualBox virtual machine window is focused

When a VirtualBox (5.1 downloaded from here: https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads ) virtual machine window is focused, if you click on an indicator icon (on the host machine, not in VirtualBox), its menu is not displayed. When this occurs, the indicator icon gets a border like when its menu is open, but no menu is displayed.
