blank desktop on 16.04 on live and installed system

I've been using 16.04 since January, but a recent upgrade broke the unity desktop. I only get the background image, no top or side bar. I installed the gnome shell as an alternative, gnome shell crashes on login. For now, I'm using dwm as a workaround.

Please let me know if you need anything else to fix this.
